    i need your help

    October 1st, 2008

so… this morning, i took the liberty of asking those great twitter folks what the first four things they opened in their web browser in the morning. mine are simple, gmail, twitter, facebook and 4mations to check what’s been going on overnight. the answers you gave were quite interesting and only go to prove that google rule the world! lol.

    1. gmail
    2. google reader
    3. twitter
    4. facebook
    5. google analytics
    6. basecamp
    7. skysports
    8. own website
    9. bbc
    10. igoogle

the other sites, which all drew include delicious, techcrunch, randommel (bless your hearts!), flickr, online banking, google calendar, google docs, times online, lynda.com, forums, wikis, google alerts, magicseaweed, freelanceswith.com, visto.com, phpmyadmin.

on a completely different topic, i’ve had too much coffee today already and am a little over-excited about those interweb fairies again. i’m thinking that i want to do more with my site – post more regularly and mix it up. I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP. i’ve considered life casting (but my life isn’t all that interesting), i’ve considered product reviews (but i kinda love them all) and so i’d love to hear from you what YOU would like to see – after all, it’s all about you. i’d really appreciate you taking a few minutes to leave your comments below.

    thankyou mucho xxx

how about a web cam and internet radio. Readers pick the music and you dance at your desk to the beat! Actually scrub that, reading it back to myself it sounds a little seedy.

How about something like a section called something like random acts – you can then encourage ‘random mel’ type behaviour and uploaded videos to prove it. Actually that sounds a bit fight club so you can scrub that too.

      Just post more woman!

You could enter the world of MP3 blogging and post up the occasional track? It’s only a little bit naughty, and good for traffic if you’re in the right networks.

I’d love to see a video diary of a week with Random Mel, It wouldn’t need to be live and the entries not to long.
But i think it would make some great and amusing viewing ;)

I think it’s because I’m watching ‘Long Way Down’ on DVD again that i came up with this.

    4. Dan Says:

Hidden camera antics around the office. Mess with people like play the “Cat game” (that’s where you have to say “meow” as many times as you can in a conversation before the other person figures out what you’re doing)

    5. Mel Says:

Loving the suggestions so far guys, thanks :) Mwhahaha – Mel hatches evil plan…. well not so much evil, more random!

    6. Drew McLellan Says:

You guys close your browsers at night?

      Weirdoes. :)

    7. Sideshow Bob Says:

I like the idea of “Challenge Mel”.
Website visitors could vote for which weekly challenge you should do and you post results the following week.

    8. rawdeadfish Says:

i vote for a mashup of dan’s and sideshow bob’s ideas! about a year i set up imasideshow.com and polled the interwebs to vote on stupid challenges and then attempted to get our intern at work to agree to take up the challenge with the most votes. we had no funding, no traffic on our site, and our intern was too chicken to be video taped doing some east-coast surfing (being dragged on a skateboard behind a car through a parking lot), so we shut it down. but you, i bet, could pull it off!!

Perhaps a social game with a twist and maybe sponsorship. perhaps a hybrid concept of ‘Where’s Wally/Waldo’ but instead ‘Where’s mel’ , donde esta mel ? etc.

Get a buddy to take a picture of random mel in a super crowded place such as a shopping center, train station with a unique identifying feature like a sponsered item such as hat or wellington boots etc or maybe just doing something “random”.

Then the person who spots you first in the high resolution picture wins said sponsored prize or goodies.

    10. Sam Says:

Hey Mel, only just found your site; and through a totally random way, may I add. Funnier still as I was contacted by someone on a site who claimed to be you – but turned out not to be. Damn those who steal other peoples photos & backgrounds to construct fake lives. Meh. I’ll have to tell you about it sometime – funny shit. Even more so since you are in the industry constructed by the fakey person :)

Anyway, back to the topic in hand. After reading a few of your posts I have a few ideas.

      - As a woman in this industry it would be cool to see you pose questions to other girls of tech. I’m sure they still don’t get as much exposure as their male counterparts. It could also be a handy resource for any aspiring Random Mels out there wanting to get a foot in the door.

      - As for a fun topic (always the best ones). I noticed your trademark, or signature is the :) You could get your readers to recreate that smiley in weird and wonderful places using any objects they saw fit, then photograph and send it to you. You could set up a flickr photostream where they could be viewed in all their glory. Every so often you could post the best ones here on your blog. Maybe someone would scrawl it in the snow after reaching the peak of Everest, or on a beach in the Caribbean, even Bansky stylee on a wall (although I wouldn’t want to condone Graffiti). The possibilities are endless.

They are just a few crunchie nuggets of gold you might want to look into :)

    11. Sam Says:

Ok my : ) turned into an actual smiley.

    12. Mel Says:

OMG – I’m so excited, I want to do all of these (and that’s not even coffee enduced excitement!).

Sam – someone was pretending to be me??? Could you email me to melkirk1 at gmail dot com to tell me about it? Thanks so much x

    13. Andrew Woods Says:

I like Slideshow Bob’s idea of Challenge Mel. But I also like the idea of you challenging others to make their own random videos and post them. You could offer a prize, but i think that participating in the internet community will be it’s own reward.

Also, since iGoogle is popular among your fans, perhaps a randommel theme, which could include any of the following – the purple/orange swirlies, the rss reader character, quotes from your video blog cue cards, and photos of everyone’s favorite photogenic video blogger ;-)

this should be interesting. I cant wait to see what you come up with :)

    14. Nathan Says:

“I challenge you to the most random output…. gauntlet laid… :)

Gauntlet taken up Miss Kirk… ;-)

    15. Los Havros Says:

I don’t have any exciting suggestions for you to blog about, like those above, but It’d be cool if you could just blog about anything: a great book you’re reading, a film or tv programme you dig. Meh, just my thoughts.

      Thursday tomorrow!!

    16. Douglas Hopkins Says:

Got some ideas for you, but please use the iPhone address to discuss. Glancing at your Flickr, may I suggest a change of Twitter headshot, my area of expertise.

Love your UK 60′s Yellow Sub graphics! The good ole’ days.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys – not to implement them all.

Douglas – what would you suggest as a change?
