dating site profile pictures you should always avoid

you’d think it would be common sense. how hard can it be to choose a picture to post to your profile on a dating site? not hard surely? then how come so many people seem to fudge it up so badly? this is my question! for those of you who are single and thinking about going on a dating site, you might want to listen to my advice. for those of you who aren’t single, you might want to watch and be smug that you’ve found your “one”. either way, enjoy.

so hopefully that’s got you off on the right footing, but i’m more than happy to help if you have any further questions. just call it my bit for the dating community :)

happy thursday and stay awesome!

I doubt that you’ve ever had to use a dating site looking the way that you do. Youre man must be a very lucky guy.

  2. James says:

    Amazing choice of song.

  3. Phill says:

I was also gonna add that that was an amazing song choice. Made my Thursday! :-)

  4. Adam says:

bollocks. the video’s not bollocks. just, well… bollocks. brb.

  5. Internet Romance says:

Fabulous, as always. Here’s a shameless plug for why you should use a good photo on your online dating site profile – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgJ5xSp9y6A

  6. Jason says:

Cute video. You’ve brightened my day, again.

  7. Rob says:

Wearing wedding rings in a photo is a bit of a give-away too! Never a good idea if you’re looking for a date and you’re attached… let alone dumb enough not to cover it up!

  8. Matt T. says:

Well, just to defend the honor of men, or I suppose to offer a criticism to women’s photos on dating sites to even the scales slightly, Ladies:

Don’t do the fish face. Ever.

You know, that weird puckered lips thing that seems to be endemic on dating site photos for women? Gah. It isn’t sexy. (If you are a science-oriented woman, form an ansatz about why women paint lips red, and then you’ll realize why the fish face doesn’t work from the perspective of a primal-man-brain.)

Oh, and as Mel said, fish face with your more attractive friend…double whammy.

Of course, in the end, the dating site photo trespasses of men are legion compared to those women can do. We are men, after all. A woman, just out of bed, bleary eyed in an out-of-focus photo is good enough for most of us men. Women, though, they actually look at the photo! :)

So cute! I’m an online dating coach and wrote about how you can take some appropriate pics for your profile with pals. (Also loved the music. Who is it?) http://eflirtexpert.blogspot.com/2009/06/say-cheese.html

  10. Christian says:

Mel, how about a picture of me next to my not so good-looking friend? :)

  11. Dave Ashenden says:

Great vid, made my morning, cheers.

  12. Dan says:

I’ve never used a dating site but I’d imagine the same fundamentals apply to social networking sites profile pictures too.

That being the case, Girls need a lesson too.

    * Photos that have been cropped to show a giant cleavage but ommit thigh-width arms and an inevitable broad-back… That illusion doesn’t work. You’ll come off a lot better if you’re honest about your size and don’t crop your photos in an obvious attempt to hide it.

    * Photos of you on a hen night with a bunch of mates all dressed as nurses/bunnies/cave women… Fine for your album… Not cool for your main profile picture!

There are more but that’ll do for now.

    Great video as always, Mel

Matt – Wow, those are all so true too. Maybe I was a bit mean to boys?

Laurie – Thanks, it’s Such Great Heights by Postal Service.

Christian – Oh good one, I didn’t think of that.

Dave – You’re very welcome, thankyou so much.

Dan – OK, maybe I gave boys a bit of a rough deal :( Sorry :)
